This is a reading from chapter 2 and is introduced with the Adagio from Stephen Paxton’s Concerto No. 1 in G, performed by Sebastian Comberti.
You can buy the music from www.celloclassics.com and the concerto is the one Susan listens to at the end of chapter one.
Instruments of Darkness: Chapter 2
And here is a video about some of the places featured in Anatomy of Murder. In which I look terrible.
And here is a video of the landscape of Island of Bones. Note the signature at the end I found in an 18th century guidebook of the area:

What a wonderful video. I love seeing the locations and learning the history that went into the book. It’s also lovely seeing you. Thank you so much for making this.
I just finished the book yesterday, and started Island of Bones today. I just thought I would take a look around the Internet to see if you had a presence there, and voila! here you are with this lovely video. I read about Instruments of Darkness on the message boards of All About Romance, and someone recommended the next two books which are not yet published in the U.S., so I got them from the Book Depository. The first book was just so beautifully crafted in terms of its plotting that I must say it is one of the best books I read this year. I enjoyed Anatomy of Murder just as much, and I’m already bout 60 pp. into Island having started it this morning, so you can see I am enjoying it, too. I know you must have your own ideas of what the characters look like, but I would love to see Stephen Dillane as Crowther. Haven’t yet decided on a Harriet…
I hadn’t thought of Stephen Dillane, but actually he’d be brilliant! I have thought of Cate Blanchett for Harriet, but let me know if you have any ideas. I’m delighted you like the books and many thanks for the support.
I was envisioning Carey Mulligan as Harriet. Do you know when Book 4 will be out?
She’s lovely and a great actress, but she looks a bit young to me. Mind you everyone does! If they make a film of Instruments in 2020 though she’d be perfect…
I couldn’t remember how old Harriet would be. Mulligan is, I believe, in her 20s and, of course, women married so much younger than. It did remember there is a significant age different between Harriet and Crowther. I believe Dillane is about 56.
Yes indeed. Harriet is already over 30 in Instruments. They did marry pretty young in the 18th century but Harriet has spent time with her husband abroad, lost one child and had two more before we meet her in Instruments. Crowther is in his 50s, so Dillane would be a good age!
ps Circle of Shadows will be out in April, I think. Or early May. I will certainly post on the blog when I have a date.
You don’t look terrible at all! You look thin – that’s the first thing I’d want to hear- and besides that, cute!
I love Cate Blanchett as Harriet, but it seems too easy somehow. How about Helena Bonham Carter (if you’re taking suggestions!) or Naomi Watts? Also I do like Stephen Dillane as Crowther, but I’ve given it a lot of thought and would suggest the man who played Mr. Pitt in The Madness of King George, Julian Wadham, mostly because of this picture: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=184516104922048&set=pu.184208274952831&type=1&theater
I love this series! As a former scientist and as a socially inept girl, I found Crowther enchanting. And as a mother of two young children and as an intellectually curious woman, I found Mrs. Westerman absolutely charming! I’ve ordered Island of Bones and am so happy you’re continuing the series. Yay!
Thanks so much for listening to my ramblings! I could play “What about this actor…” all day.
Very glad you like the series! I do like Naomi Watts a great deal – I thought The Painted Veil was beautiful. And I can see the appeal of Julian Wadham too. Man knows how to wear a wig. And thanks for saying I look thin! Not sure that I do – writing is not a very healthy occupation, and my boyfriend is an excellent cook…
Hello, I am from Sarasota, Florida. I absolutely love your series and characters! I have read every one of your books and am anxiously awaiting the next! Thank you for doing the videos as they give a good visual to go with the novels. I have spent a lot of time in London as well as in the UK but there were areas mentioned in the novel that I had not seen previously. Also, you look great in the video, not at all terrible, and it was lovely to get to know you a bit through the video. You have a great personality and voice as well! I primarily read historical fiction/mystery and this series is definitely a favorite. Thanks for writing such a wonderful series and I hope that another book will be out soon – no pressure, mind you, just have it out in a few weeks time! All the best and I wish you every happiness!
Thank you! That’s extremely kind of you to say and much appreciated. All the best to you too.
